Sleep Deprivation

I think my whole household is suffering from sleep deprivation. I don't understand my kids at all. They are both up with the sun (at least that's the rule I finally had to make when Hayden kept coming in our room before 6:00 - he couldn't wake up until the sun woke up.) So between 6:00 and 6:30 every morning I have two happy, ready to conquer the day cuties jumping into my bed to wake me up. I am SO NOT a morning person! I don't get them. Rebecca has a 2 - 3 hour nap in the afternoon, but Hayden doesn't nap anymore. He'll usually crash for about 2 hours once during the week, and he usually has a forced nap on Sunday, but he won't sleep unless we lay down with him- which I can't do every day during the week, as much as I'd like to. So then they are going strong till bedtime at 9:00. The smart thing for me to do would be to go to bed by 10 or 10:30 so I get a good full night sleep before they're up and ready to go at 6:19 (this morning's time.) But no, as tired as I am by the time they go to bed, I have to have some time for myself, so I end up staying up too late, just for the cycle to repeat itself. Is it normal for kids to only get 9 - 9 1/2 hours of sleep a night???? I've contemplated putting them to bed earlier, but I still have hope, even after almost 4 years that they'll start liking sleep and they'll sleep past 7:00. It does happen once in a blue moon, and those mornings are WONDERFUL! So along with their early mornings they get a mom who is sleep deprived and not so happy to see a whole box of cereal poured out onto the floor. Hmm, go wonder. I learned an important lesson watching Curious George the other day (yes, he is very wise.) "Kids need sleep to grow." So here's my question... How much sleep do kids need? When I asked one pediatrician years ago (when Hayden was about 18 months) he said probably a total of 10 - 12 hours a day. Yes, including naps and night. I had to ask him because that seemed so little to me. I didn't like that answer. I'm thinking I might have to start putting them to sleep earlier and give up hope of them sleeping in, and risk the chance that Rebecca won't take such long afternoon naps. What do you think???
P.S. I appologize if I don't sound so happy and perky, I'm a little tired. :)

I am like you - not a morning person. Lukily my kids are usually not up until after 7 and they usually are in bed by 7:30 or 8:00 or even earlier for Megan if she does not get a nap. Maybe my kids are like me, but they seem to need a lot of sleep. If Megan does not nap during the day, she usually sleeps a solid 12 hours at night. I would assume that the amount of sleep a child needs is different for every child - maybe your kids just don't need that much sleep. Good luck with it!

I wish I knew the trick, Cody never get's up before 8 or 8:30am, it may be the fact that he know's I can't function even that early. He goes to bed about 8:30, have you tried a earlier bed time, sometimes if I put him to bed earlier he actually sleeps in later, wierd I know but it's worth a shot. Jake however is on a no sleep kick this week, wan't to play at 3am and won't nap, you have that whole thing to look forward to again soon:)

Okay, I'm so sorry! You have always battled this, and I personally don't know how you function! My neighbor is very strict about her "quiet time" every day. Her son goes into his room, and she plays a CD and he knows he can't come ot until the music stops. He's not in trouble, and he knows that, so he just plays. She says it works like a charm. My advice would be put your kids to bed at 7:00 or 7:30! You need way more time to yourself just to decompress!

P.S. I can tell you're tired because in your post you said 'Go wonder' instead of 'Go figure' or 'wonder why'. You poor thing! ;D

Sarah just reside yourself that you are "clinically stupid" because that is what I have had to do. At least that is what one study I read about the amount of sleep we need, called it, when you are sleep deprived. It is definitely how I feel when I am that tired - which is a lot , sorry It could get better, but then again you might have teenagers by then that keep you up late, and you have to stay up even later just to get a minute of alone time.

My kids go to bed around 7pm quite a bit. Now that it is pitch black at 5pm they don't know the difference. The get up at the crack of dawn as well, so put the kids to bed early.
